Role Players 2013

SAFEENA HUSAIN

Executive Director
Educate Girls

Building on 15 years of experience working with grassroots projects around the world, including community projects she herself started in Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, and South Africa, Safeena Husain has now settled in India to drive the agenda closest to her heart – that of girls education. With practical, firsthand experience of how educating women can impact some of the most pressing root causes of poverty, particularly health, Safeena returned to her mother country to found Educate Girls. Born and raised in Delhi, Safeena went on to study at London School of Economics and Political Sciences gaining a bachelor of science.

She is committed to education and positive international cultural exchange. From 1997 to 2004 Ms. Husain was the Executive Director for Child Family Health International (CFHI.org) in San Francisco, where she was responsible for managing and supporting a range of development programs in the area of health. She was also Board Chair for International Development Exchange (IDEX.org), a non-profit organization in San Francisco.

Since 2002 Safeena has brought her depth of knowledge about development to the complex issue of gender inequality in education in India. She currently works in close to 5,700 schools in Rajasthan serving over a million children.
